I have a number of classic cars. One of them has had a serious engine failure. I have found a club member who is breaking a rotted out example with a good engine/gearbox. The problem is transporting it (I imagine it would have to be palleted). Does anybody have any advice? The journey is from South Yorkshire to North Hertfordshire. Thank you...

You could try Shiply, or Palletline type operation or ask at general carriers you either know yourself or the seller knows of locally.

You are fortunate in that i expect times isn't of the essence so much so it can be fitted on or in with other deliveries that coincide.

If a Palletline type company it will need strapping well to a pallet, most collections and deliveries will be with a rigid but unless there is a fork truck available both ends you should specify that a tail lift vehicle will be required both ends, should be no problem in itself but might be a small extra charge, they'll transfer it via fork truck as groupage from thge collection lorry to an artic for probable overnight transfer to another depot local to you, where another tail lift rigid will deliver, so someone will have to be available both ends unless you can make suitable arrangements.

Might be worth mentioning on any forums you are a member of, someone running down empty with a car transport trailer could bring it down which would help pay for the fuel for the empty journey, similarly someone with a pick up running empty could do the same (or even stick it in the bed/boot of a pick up or old car being transported), this latter option would probably be cheapest as pound notes would be the order of the day.

Thinking cap on, get posting and telephoning.

At work we use pallet track in Rotherham - www.courierlogistics.co.uk/our-services/overnight-.../, We rarely send pallets but use the standard courier side of the company everyday, they are pretty good although non of them are perfect.

It's only about two hours up the road, why not just go there with a trailer and pick it up? Alternatively, you could hire a small van for a day for about £30, and perhaps £50 on diesel to drive there and back.

The big advantage is that you get to see what you're buying before handing any money over. You'll probably also end up coming back with various other bits of the car being broken up which weren't worth the seller advertising separately.

You won't need a forklift, just a wogon that has a tail-lift. The standard pallet trucks that the drivers all have with them can comfortably take 500kg, and relatively easy to move around onto the tail-lift.

We use SLI : www.sli.co but we are account holders, so probably a lot cheaper than one-off rates. We can get a 500kg pallet from north wales to Essex for about £50.

I have transported engines/gearboxes etc in the back of a family hatch many times in the past with no problems. Simply lift the engine in and out using an engine hoist, gearboxes can be easily lifted unless they are commercial size.

Just make sure they are well secured, don't want them hitting you in the back during an emergency stop.

Thanks for the comments. Quite a few options to follow up. My main reason for not transporting it myself is that L4 and L5 have prolapsed and the consultant has set a 28lb lifting limit.
