I want to sell my car, it might be worth about £900 or less. Auto trader recommended £500, but there is a lot of crap around that price, and my car is better then that.

Someone told me the best place is to sell it on Autotrader, but the advertising costs seem to be pretty steep.

Are there any special offers around?

I do wash the car, as I need to take photos, but it seems to attract dust, I am no idea how car dealers get on top of this?

I find Gumtree better for low value motors and it's free. Out of curiosity what is it?

My brother has just sold his car on Autotrader. It was only £15.95 for selling a car for less than £1500. It was much cheaper than he'd expected it to be and he could include 20 photographs in the advert. The car sold within a couple of hours of the ad being published to the first person who called.

He was very pleased with Autotrader. You can change the advert after it's been published and they give you alternative local phone numbers to use, which protects your own home and mobile numbers from spamming. Also, once the car has sold, you can remove the ad so that you don't keep getting people phoning you.

He'd advertised the car in our local paper the previous week and got no reponse whatsoever.

I don't think Autotrader is expensive, for a car under £1000 it is only £9.95 for two weeks ?

I do agree about keeping it clean though, mine is for sale and it looks good after a wash but not for long !

You have to pay for motors on Gumtree.

If it has been sometime since you last washed your car-first give it a nice slush over with lots of water...then apply and thoroughly sponge with a bucket of fairy liquid( not too much-it's abrasive-but just enough for a few nice bubbles)-rinse again-then finish off with a leather.

When dry-then apply a good value thin white wax all over, (except front windscreen!) .Any supermarket brand will do-leave to dry for 5 minutes--then polish off hard with a duster. Cost -about £2.50 and an hour(max) of your time. Result-nice clean car.

PS-Don't forget to thoroughly vac or brush out the interior too--dust off the dash-then wipe( don't spray-it goes everywhere!) on any old surface cleaner and let dry-polish off after 5 mins. Cost £0.30p-time -15 minutes.

Car back to near showroom condition in an hour for £2.80.

If you have some service history, old MoTs, receipts for work done - get it organised in a folder for any buyer to see - assuming the paperwork is favourable.

A clean car, outside & inside.

It is easier to sell & as all dealers know you can polish £££s into a car in a few hours & the extra is tax free!

What car are you selling? I sold my Toyota on Ebay in no time, the chap came from up north by train to get it.

For those who asked - I am selling a Nissan Primera (75k)

Advertising: I will take the plunge with Autotrader....

Cleaning: I bought a replacement car, but I did n't even need to wash it for two months. They must have used some amazing products on it, as it was dust repellent. It is the best valeted car I have seen. I had n't noticed when I bought the car but they even 'dyed' the carpet black. I asked the car dealer, which valeting company they used, still waiting 3 months for a reply! Trade secret?

I spent £48 on various Auto Glyn products, so could valet the car for sale but can't match their results!. I used a liquid wax rather then a hard wax (don't know if that makes a difference). I did not use t-cut or clay....

I have taken Doubleug' suggestion and washed the car with Fairy Liquid. The car is sparkling. I will give it coat of wax tomorrow!. Will see how long the dust stays off for!

I do have a vax carpet washer (with upholstery tool) dont know if I should try it on the car seats. Dont want materials to shrink....

The most common mistake I seem to see on Autotrader and the like is cars photographed on a sunny day. It results in too much contrast, i.e. the light areas become too light and the dark areas too dark, so that you can't see any detail, particularly inside the car. If you take the shots on a dull day, a digital camera will lighten everything up and show all the detail. I hope this is helpful.

I clean my seats and upholstery in the car with a bissell carpet cleaner during the summer months. never had a problem with it.
