Car for an 18yo - Ka OK? - frank_butcher

My son has his test in a few weeks. He wants to get a car for travelling to work / uni - a general small city car. Budget is £750

There seems to be plenty of Kas available within the price range of £350 to £1000. What's the best to go for?

* Private or Trade
* Low mileage or high mileage with FSH
* Forget Ka - look for different manufacturer

Apart from general checks is there something specific that we should be looking out for? Assume an 05-07 Ka: Rust? belts needs changing?

The first generation of Ka (up to 2008) is notorious for rust. Have a look at any one of them at the slam edge of the door, on the sill. Here is the HJ full review for them : www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ford/ka-1996/

A far better car is something like a Toyota Yaris. They're about as reliable as you could wish for.

Ideally, he buys from a private seller - at that price bracket you normally get more car for your money. Condition and service record are far more important than low or high mileage - a car that has been meticulously looked after is worth paying extra for, compared to something that has been tarted up to attract a buyer.

Great fun little car with few problems.A Ka of this age will have the Rocam engine.Check for overheating/loss of coolant and make sure the heater works correctly..All Ka are chain drive camshaft.The biggest killer on these is rust.Even at 8-9 years old these can suffer serious chassis and sill corrosion that can make them an un-economic repair.Fiesta would possibly make a better choice as they don't seem to rot as bad.

I spent a while looking for one of these for my daughter a couple of years ago, every one I saw was rusty, often quite badly. She ended up getting a Yaris and it gave her 2 years of trouble free motoring, she's got an Aygo now so was happy to stay with Toyota.

I owned two Ka in the past.No touble with rust on either.A 2002 with Kent engine and a 2006 SportKa(1600 Rocam).The first for four years,the second for seven.Both were excellent,reliable and the only outgoing other than servicing was a front spring on the 1600 just before I sold it.There were rust problems on very early ones(96-98) but later ones were better.

You may have been one of the lucky ones - see HJ's Car-by-Car review and you'll see that older (even those built well after 2000) still suffered from serious corrosion problems (amongst other issues) and aren't worth repairing. For the £750 budget the OP is looking at, you'll not get a newer one which might be suffering less.

I've found that cars normally known for rusting in older age have to be meticulously looked after (often at great expense) to keep them in roadworthy condition, as opposed to some which are considered to be 'worthy but dull' (normally Japanese from the Toyota and Honda stables) but just keep going and going just with normal servicing, the occasional replacement part every few years, and a clean every couple of months.

At this budget level, condition matters much more than make or model. Some service history would be an advantage.

That said, I'd be looking at either a Ford (lots around to choose from; the Fiesta is less rust-prone than the Ka) or a Toyota (Yaris or Aygo; a better chance of finding a good one). The Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107 are the same as the Aygo.
