The seven quietest roads in Britain - focussed

I used to use no 7 - the A1062 Potter Heigham to Hoverton road two or three times a week - I wouldn't call it a particularly quiet road - especially in the holiday months.

I'm hoping the A897 stays that way - it's part of my road trip planned for next year.

Unless these roads were closed for long term road works there is no way the cars per year figure in the table are correct. The "quietest" road is showing less than a thousand cars a year, less than three cars a day.
It's only a bit of fun but you wonder how someone can go to all the trouble of creating a graphic and article about figures and not even think about whether they are remotely possible.

Having driven the A897, top of the list, a few years back I can vouch for for it's lack of traffic - the road has very few signs of habitation and most tourists stick to the A9/A99/A836 either to get to John O'Groats (the naffest place on earth), they're doing the North Coast 500 or because they avoid single track like the plague.

Its a story based on a very basic data mining exercise.

However all the data is on the DFT website and the method of gathering the data is explained.

The A897 is in the one area of Scotland I have never been - I'll get there one day!

It's a great road in winter - with a decent chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

The far North-East has little to recommend it apart from Castle of Mey if you're a fan of the Queen Mother and Dunnet Head which is the most northerly point of mainland Britain. John o'Groats is the pits, but a must visit for Scottish grockles.

The northern coast road from Melvich to Durness and then down the West Coast is well worth the drive

Yes I've looked at the DoT data and the A897, the "quietest" road, has 298 vehicles as an average daily figure. Still very quiet but not the level the article quotes.

Anyway, more constructively, I've driven the Melvich to Durness stretch as recommended by RT. It is a good trip.

It's also worth going further from Durness to Tongue, great road, fantastic scenery and well behaved (mainly German & Dutch) camper van drivers who pull over to let you pass on the single track parts.

The A 897 is so bendy (and quiet) that you tend to drive using a zoomed in sat nav! But beware of sheep - they ignore the cars completely and believe they have the right to be there, not ewe!

Satnav? You don't need one - there's only two junctions in it's 38 miles!

You do if you're in a hurry to catch the ferry at Scrabster!

You wouldn't use the A897 to get to Scrabster from any direction!

My road is pretty quiet. But it is a cul-de-sac.
