Never seen one! - Vauxhall Sintra - oldroverboy.

I realised, reading an article on the site, that I had never seen or heard of a Sintra.

Did anyone ever have one of them.

It was an attempt by GM to use one of their less successful US models in Europe by adding a full-size MPV to the successful Zafira mid-size MPV.

It was badly built in the US and it's European reliability was dire - even by OpelVauxhall's middle-of-the-road standard.

The total sold in the UK was under 4,500 over a 3 year period, although the odd one, literally, was sold after that.

I was working at a Vauxhall main dealer when these were current.I think dire is an understatment! You could even buy one with the 2.5 V6 engine.Btw,if anybody wants an owners handbook for one of these beasts,I think I've got one.

The engine options were a 2.2 petrol developed/built by Holden in Australia, the 3.0 V6 petrol built by Vauxhall Ellesmere Port and the 2.2 diesel (don't know where that came from).

I recall seeing on the box, Kate Humble in the original Top gear before Klaxon took over, when they parked it behind a muckspreader and coated it.

It was one of those rare Vauxhall models that wasnt heavily discounted when brand new,

I recall the Vauxhall dealer wouldnt offer much discount compared to the rest of the range.

Sintra numbers falling rapidly

preview.tinyurl.com/z7qeru9

Article covers top 50 fastest disappearing cars in the UK

Korean cars numbers (10+ years old) seem to be falling off a cliff

The article says this is due to High cost of a repair = a trip to the scrappie.

Maybe true but any damage to the bodywork = insurance write-off as well + MoT failures on emissions

How long before we see perfectly good body/mechanical cars going to the scrappie because of complex electrical/electronic faults?

Work colleage had one. Engine failed, scrapped.

This was around the same time that they were trying to sell Omegas as Cadillac Cateras in the USA - complete with one of the worst adverts ever featuring Cindy Crawford and an animated duck. At the time I was working for a shipping line that carried a large volume of GM product across the Atlantic. The estimates for the volumes of these 2 turkeys was hugely optimistic.

Cadillac's volume estimates have been way off for decades, and it goes on - despite their home advantage, their total volume & sales have slipped to 5th in the premium/luxury sector - behind Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz & Lexus with Hyundai Genesis threatening to push the down further.

Without the Escalade truck, Cadillac would be dead in the water.

Could say the same for a BMW owned Rover 25 I had. Car went because it had chronic rust in the rear floor pan next the main structure points and along the bottom door edges, and this was a Y reg model which should have been by todays standards totally protected from such rusting. And then I see on HJ that the 200/25s are rapidly dissapearing and I can hazard a guess why.
