I wonder why?

Police don't give this enough attention - untaxed, uninsured, unroadworthy perhaps even un-qualified to drive - it's a much greater problem than someone driving at 35 in a 30 zone at 7am on a Sunday morning (for example) - time to ask the candidates standing for election as Police Commisioner what they will do about this matter (whoever they are!) - take a few cloned vehicles off the road and other crimes will fall too

Why?

Because too much reliance on electronic enforcement - so generated penalties just don't reach the drivers of the clones.

Electronic enforcement and virtual elimination of traffic police means that honest people who make mistakes have to pay penalties but dishonest people get away with almost everything - if a political party made that a manifesto pledge, would anyone ever vote for them?

They'll be the ones speeding through the Average speed camera zone with such abandon then. The cloned/fake plate lot and the stupid.

Sure seems to be a lot of them.

I had a speeding ticket years ago from London. Hadn't been there for years, and never been to the place where it was reported.

The car had never been on the internet or advertised with a photo which could provide the details - make + year+ colour+model.

The nearest the car had been to that part of London was more than 100 miles away.

I can only assume that it had been sighted, the number noted down and fake plates obtained - scary!

I had a parking ticket issued in London in similar circumstances. Fortunately the ticket described my Nissan as a Vauxhall and it was rescinded. I put it down to a short sighted warden.

I'm not particularly convinced by this figure of 1 in 12 vehicles. If it was really that high, everyone would know of many people who had received speeding or parking tickets for offences they didn't commit. I can only think of one person I know who has had this happen to him. His number plates were physically stolen off his car the day before and fitted to an identical model and colour of car which had presumably been stolen.

The article states that there are around 1.75 million cars stolen over the last ten years or so which have never been recovered and then assumes that all of these are running around on cloned plates.

That is a very big assumption - a far more logical explanation (which there is a fair bit of evidence for) is that these cars are either no longer in the country (a large number end up in places like Albania) or have been dismantled and sold on as spares.

Likewise, I do not believe the 1 in 12 figure. 1 in 100 would still seem high but a bit more believable.

The article itself appears to be a clone of a press release from an international organisation representing auto theft investigators!!

This story is the reason why I have no interest in any of what the so called newspapers now publish.

Its all about publishing a headline as clickbait and then backing up the headline with a story to try and prove 1+1=3.

You only need to read the first line or two of most newspapers stories to know the rest of the story is completely made up:

"One in 12 of the 37 million vehicles on UK roads COULD have cloned registration plates, according to new research."

The word 'could' shows they are making stuff up.

I had a car taking up my private car parking space, I asked all the neighbhoors. I assumed it was a neigbhoors visitors coming over for Easter.

I then did an online check and things did not add up. The car plate was for a Ford, but fitted to an Audi. Apparently it was a stolen car.

If the thieves had put the car on the public road, they coudl have got away with it, but it was their foolish mistake to park in my space and annoy me.

The police turned up with a car carrier and haulled it away. I did not tell the neighbhoors the car was stolen, but it scareed them to think I have the power to get cars removed from my private car parking space by the police!
