Hi,

I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

I viewed a car today with a private buyer, priced competitively and I am interested so did a check on ukvehicle.com

It came back : This vehicle has finance recorded against it

but the details show that the oustanding finance is on another car (different make/model ) that had the same private plate reg number on it at some point. The car now has a different (and generic) reg number.

Is there anything to worry about , apart from the fact future buyers may be put off if I try to sell ?

Walk away.

There are hundreds of thousands of cars for sale in the UK at any one time. Never, ever even consider something with even the potential of ownership/title problems.

If it goes wrong, you lose your money AND your new car.

You need to read it carefully and see if it is recorded against the VIN or not.

The standard HPI check is very confusing as if a car has had a private plate on it - even 10 years ago - which could be on 4 cars later which has finance it will highlight it.

This is increasingly common with more and more cars on lease with a private plate on.

The way things are going if you rule out all cars which once had a plate on which now is in another car with finance you'll rule out 95% of cars on sale!

Check it very carefully thouugh.

Buy from a dealer and reduce the risk and gain the Sale of Goods Act.
