w reg Audi A 3 - fluctuating temperature - scatty mare

Ive had this car a few weeks and this morning I noticed the temperate gauge go from its normal of 65 to nearly 80. once I turned on the vents and opened a window it seemed to bring it down. On my way to work this morning it slowly rose to 80 again but suddenly dropped to its usual 60 while still moving. Ive recently had it serviced ( 1 week ago) any ideas please.

Probably an air lock. Any decent garage should be able to bleed it.

But 60 or 65 is not normal, 90 is normal for most modern engines. This could also be accounted for by an air lock.

phew! thank you! I'll ask the garage that did the service to bleed it for me.

Did they change the coolant at the service ? I suspect the thermostat is the problem. Regards Peter

... or maybe the radiator fan isn't coming on.

Unless your temperature gauge reads in Fahrenheit, the normal temperature should be 85-90 degrees Celcius/Centigrade.

If it sits at 60 when fully warmed up - or - fluctuates below 80 - I'd suspect a faulty or sticking thermostat.

If gauge erratic up one time down another, it will probably be the temperature sensor.

When getting the replacement sensor don't buy one off ebay or the like as they are not reliable. I did and had to take the whole lot apart again and put in a proper Audi one.

As others have said, it could be just the thermostat. Although that was the option I went for first and it turned out to be the temperature sensor :)
