Negotiating used car price with main dealers? - Warning

When I ask dealers how much they can knock off. They usually say about £200 and sometimes £500. Is that the going rate for negotiation?.

How do people negotiate with car dealers. Some seem disinterested. Others play hardball.

Is better to go to second tier car dealers?

If you appear to be serious, then most dealers will treat you seriously. LEARN about your subject. Be serious, and you will be treated as such

If you appear to be a comedian, or have no idea about what you want, or appear to be wasting the dealer's time, then be prepared to be treated like a waste of time.

Also, it all depends on the price of the cars you're looking at. £200-£500 off a £10k car is a lot different to the same off a £2k car.

There was a similar thread couple of weeks ago. I get a quote from drivethedeal and if the dealer can get close to it then use the dealer, if not use drivethedeal. Dependent upon many factors you could get thousands off.

You need to be a good negotiator - many professionals spend years perfecting that skill so it all comes down to how good you are naturally - just remember that salesment often get trained as negotiators to keep the price up !

Some years back when I worked on a small team developing new products, we had a dedicated buyer along with the engineers and technicians.

Walked up town with the buyer one lunchtime, he saw a cricket bat he fancied in a sports shop, went in and haggled £5 off the price. It was his custom to always try and negotiate when shopping at any other than national chains, often worked for him, but he had lots of practice dealing with our suppliers.

When I ask dealers how much they can knock off...

Its not that simple.

Do some work on Autotrader and others to work out what a good deal looks like.

I paid the full £24k asking price on my landcruiser, with only asking for a towbar to be fitted.

Conversely, I walked away from £1000 off a Yaris.

In each case, I knew what the market value was, and I was ready to do a deal then and there. I had to move very quickly on the landcruiser - it was very competitively priced. But the Yaris would still have been there a week later.

Do your homework by

1) surfing Autotrader-big time

2) Reading up articles in Motoring Mags re the "Best way to buy"

3) Looking at your own budget and sifting the options

4) If selling or part exchanging-Working out just what your current car is "worth"...

5) Build your negotiation around information gathering re the model( 1,2 &4 above), the finance options, plus your own researched private target price(the max you are prepared to pay).

Sometimes buying a new car is cheaper than buying a nearly new, Quite often makers will do 0% finance (if you have a good credit record) and on top sometimes sweeten the deal with discounts from the deler on the list price.

Car costs £20K, 0% to say 3% finance on discounted price of say £17/18K works out cheaper than paying 9 or 10% on say a year old car @ £15K.

Do the homework, get the deals in writing and try and compare apples with apples.

Alternative but similar version I use as follows:

1) Find the same car on Motorpoint's (or other similar car supermarket) website.

2) Tell the dealer what the car supermarket is selling the same car for. It's likely to be about £1500 to £2000 less for a 15k car.

3) If after several cups of scorching coffee the dealer has come with a few hundred pounds, buy the car.

4) If they can't get that close, go to the car supermarket but don't expect any discount on their screen price. It's their simple no nonsense fast selling in large volumes which keeps their prices down. All nearly new cars are ex hire cars regardless of where you buy from, and very few main dealers sell used cars older than this these days.
