1998 1.6 VW Golf - Engine cutting out at low revs when reversing - Nathan156

Hi guys

Looking for some advice. I have a 1998 1.6 golf which is still going strong however it has recently starting cutting out at low revs when I'm reversing or in a low gear and I don't give it enough gas so I'm currently having to keep the revs high to stop it from cutting out.

When the engine does cut out. It then takes a few goes to turn it over to get her going again.

I did some searching on the Internet and numerous different threads suggested changing the air filter and cleaning the valve which opens to let the air intake.

What's you thoughts on this.

Many thanks

Nathan

As with any car, a service is the first thing to do: Filters, plugs, etc.

Could well be some accumulation of deposits in the inlet side too - but it's more likely to be airflow sensor rather than throttle butterfly valve. Gunk around the latter usually results in a stiff or 'jerky' pedal at light throttle openings.

What's the service history of it?

Clean the throttle valve (butterfly valve) first and see if that makes any difference. This is very rarely done at any service, but can make quite a difference. An old toothbrush is a good implement for thsi job - don't swamp it with cleaner.

Do you have a picture or link for this please? What cleaner do you use?

Go to any motor factors and ask for 'carburettor cleaner'.

So, how's it been for the last month?
