I have drove this car for a number of years now but have started to have a problem with starting when cold ( usual problems) having changed the glow plugs I was told that the Wax stat needs changing as my choke is not working.
Having tried to find this part I think that it could be called something else.

Any help would be much appreciated

According to my Peugeot parts manual it's called "Idle control".

part number 1647 58.

Probably only Peugeot parts now.

Is it turning over as fast as it should, tired battery or starter could well be the problem, or poor connections in the starter circuit. In my experience the auto cold advance makes very little difference.

I agree with Peter, that is exactly what my thoughts were reading the OP's post.

Back to basics. It's an indirect injection, compression ignition engine. Air is drawn into the cylinder and compressed to a ratio of around 18:1. This highly compressed air is now very hot (around 500 degrees centigrade) and volatile, onto which fuel is injected in a high pressure (around 300psi) very fine spray. Fuel immediately vapourises and ignites, and the expanding gases drive the piston down the cylinder.

If your having cold starting problems, but engine otherwise runs ok then consider the following:

Insufficient quantity or partly deoxygenated air drawn into engine cylinder.
Loss of compression resulting in reduced compressed air temperature.
Loss of fuel pressure ie. Worn injectors, worn pump, or loss of primary fuel supply.
Air ingress into fuel system allowing fuel to drain back to fuel tank.
Engine cranking slowly due to battery or connection fault.

While I already answered the O/P,

Perhaps this will help,

ok it was the 1.9 but identical control systems on the pump.

So owner drives right in the doors gets out and leaves it idleing?

at around 1500+RPM.

"Please do something if only for the day,it's almost undrivable!"

So I gave him the only quick option,

he agreed and I cut the control wire from the waxstat with snips.

Idle speed now 750-800.

This was ovr 4 years ago and he just doesn't want a new one fitted.

who can blame him it starts every day.

That idle control or waxstat ONLY alters the idle speed on a cold engine,

nothing to do with starting.

And in my opinion here in this country it just doesn't really get cold for it to function at all!

I'm with railroad's clear explanation here,

though I would add my PRIMARY test on any diesel engine is the initial cranking speed.

180 rpm is accepatable,just.

but I like to see higher.

So what's the cold engine cranking RPM?
