Ford Focus 2012 1.6 (105bhp) Petrol - graham123

My old 1.6 Zetec SE (100bph) Ford Focus 53 (2003) did 2500rpm at 60mph. My current 62 (2012) Ford Focus 1.6 (105bph) ti-vct engine does 2750rpm at 60mph. Why the difference given they are both 1.6 petrol engines?

What rpm then would maximum speed in my newer Focus be in 5th gear. About 6500rpm?

The difference is because you've overfilled the oil. That makes the engine run faster, because it's got more lubrication.

If it does 2750rpm at 60mph, then simple maths will tell you it'll do a theoretical 142MPH at 6500 RPM, but you'd need a steep downhill gradient with a helluva tailwind to achieve it.

The difference between your 2003 and 2012 models is simply Fords have changed the overall final drive ratio.

I don't know what RobJP was on when he replied last night, but I'd like a pint of it please.

Because the same person has started several threads in the last week or so, asking for EXACTLY how much over 'MAX' oil level is dangerous to his engine. Is it 1mm, 25mm ??? Etc, etc.

Obviously, if you overfill with oil, then the engine will be better lubricated. As such, it will give more BHP and run faster. No ?

Let's get this straight, Rob. You fill your engine with an excessive 0.001 litres of oil, which according to my calculations equates to 2.33 mm above the top mark on the dipstick as measured on perfectly level ground after the car has been standing for at least 12 hours. (The boot must be completely empty and the tyres fully inflated, otherwise the car will not sit at the correct angle.)

If you do that, all the engine oil seals will fail and the cat will clog, probably within 63 miles. If the weather is warm it could be sooner. The EGR valve will fail just afterwards.

You really shouldn't give dangerously misleading advice, Rob. I mean, the BHP will obviously improve, but it is worth it, if it lands the OP with a bill of thousands?

I think Tom is going to want a pint of what you're on too.

10W-40 will do for me.

Sorry RobJP I didn't realise the OP had previously posted.
