Vectra b tourer estate 2001 - Rear windscreen heater - rookie48
When I switch the rear heater on the dashboard lights go dim and it blows the 40amp fuse. Dead short I suspect. I have removed rear screen trim and had a look at the screen connections but can't see much . Do you have any thoughts on the problem. Apart from an expensive visit to Vauxhall dealer to trace the fault.
Many thanks rookie49

Connect a 12v bulb across the terminals of the heated rear screen fuse and switch on the ignition. If the bulb lights at full brightness you have a short circuit. Disconnected the heated rear screen and see if the light goes out. If it does you have found where your problem lies. If t stays on you still have a short circuit. Push and pull the wiring about until the light goes out, and when it does it's a matter of locating exactly where the fault is. Common places are where the wiring goes between the tailgate and the roof. Chafing to earth here is the likely problem.

Does your car have heated door mirrors,as they are on the same circuit.?Not too sure why you want to take this to a main dealer, there must be plenty of electrical specialists around.

If you can disconnect the rear screen at the window and the fuse still goes you have a wiring short, if it doesn't must be the element on the window although Its unusual for that to happen.
