Vauxhall Astra, Volkswagen Golf - Help me decide - Astra of Golf - zulu89delta

Good morning everyone,

The time has come to say goodbye to my trusty Toyota Corolla, and welcome a different car to the family.

My needs are:

  • Petrol (short journeys)
  • 5 Door (current car is 3 door, people hate clambering in to the back)
  • Quick-ish (i'm an enthusiastic driver at times)
  • Quiet and refined (nice relaxing commutes)
  • Reliable!

From those needs and a bit of research I came to a few options, which I could afford on my £8k budget. Which are:

  • 2010 VW Golf Mk6 1.4 TSI SE (122)
  • 2013 Vauxhall Astra J 1.4T SRi (140)
  • 2012 Toyota Auris 1.6 Valvematic SR (130)
  • 2010 VW Polo Mk5 1.2 TSI SEL (105)

From further research and test drives I narrowed this down to just the Astra and the Golf. My pros and cons for each car are as follows.

2013 Vauxhall Astra J 1.4T SRi (140)

Pro

  • Enjoyable driving experience
  • Seems quite powerful
  • Positive gear changes
  • Good leg room in the front and rear
  • Very comfortable and very well refined
  • Good boot space
  • From all research the engine seems to be pretty solid

Con

  • Internal pillars are quite obstructive at junctions
  • Turbo lag was noticeable
  • MPG is nowhere near the quoted figure
  • Tyres size with the 18" rims are a bit pricey

2010 VW Golf Mk6 1.4 TSI SE (122)

Pro

  • Superior switchgear
  • Superior refinement
  • Good visibility
  • Better throttle response
  • Engine feels smoother

Con

  • Ride felt overly firm
  • Dealership was very pushy
  • From research there seems to be concerns over the timing chain tensioner causing catastrophic engine failure, how common this is, I don't know

So...here is my dilemna, I can't for the life of me choose between the cars.

From my experience, they both drive very similarly...and while there are qualities about the VW that I prefer, I have been put off by a lot of negative comments regarding timing chain issues. Which is something I am yet to see about the Vauxhall.

I would like to know which car you would pick? And why?

Especially if you own either of these cars!

Any guidance/advice would be greatly appreciated, as at the minute I'm in a bit of a pickle :)

Thanks in advance!

012 Toyota Auris 1.6 Valvematic SR would be the safest choice, dealer are 10/10

VW's 1.4tsi with timing chains had a number of very expensive issues, newer versions with cambelts seam to have solved these issues. But the newer ones may be implicated in the cheating scandle. So quite a hard call in in all

Astra is not one i've tried so cant comment.

Keep British (as much as possible) and go for the Astra or Auris.

I used to do that, buy British only, long before (and long after) a certain politician jumped on the Buy British bandwagon whilst with the other sleight of hand signing off european treaties such as the ERM to the detriment of most home bred manufacturers and especailly the workers in those factories.

I realised finally that i was one of only a few doing so and retailers and manfacturers of the time were deliberatly misleading the buying public though disgraceful use of the Union Flag applied to Indian, such as Tata's offering behind badged Rover, and Chinese made items, such as Belling's microwave...both complete with our national flag...Victoria would have rightly sent a gunboat.

As regards the two cars here, there's probably not a lot to choose between them one might have a better badge even if its currently discoloured, you could do worse than be swayed by how good, or not, the people who are going to look after the vehicle prove to be, maybe ask around about that.

One of the qualities I like about my old corolla is the made in Britain sticker in the corner of the windscreen. But like you say, that can sometimes be a tactic to sell us products by pulling on our heartstrings.

Thanks for your input.

But like you say, that can sometimes be a tactic to sell us products by pulling on our heartstrings.

That is true but in the case of the Auris and the Astra they are built in the UK and if I was wating to buy a new car as long as it's suibale for what I wanted then I'd very much like to stick to a British built car.

You make a good point, thank you

Neither-A Fiesta is better than both.

Buy the Auris, it's unlikely to give you any trouble. My second choice would be the Astra, they're a comfortable car but can have engine management issues.

Can you elaborate on the engine management issues at all? Thanks.

Not sure about the 1.4T engine, but vauxhalls are notorious for trouble with engine sensors such as the coolant temp and map sensors.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will fill in the gaps.

Neither-A Fiesta is better than both.

Having been a passenger in one, as a works vehicle, I find the interior to be quite cramped and intrusive. And the 1.0 ecoboost engine, certainly didn't seem quick. Might just be me though!

Vauxhall Astra, Volkswagen Golf - Help me decide - Astra of Golf - gordonbennet

I have to drive the company pool cars now and again, some of which are Fords, one of which is a Fiesta, what a horrid cramped vile gutless thing it is too, in fact hand on heart i just don't understand the hype that Fords get, wouldn't give you a thankyou for one.

My daughter is running a Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost. I have travelled in it and driven it. I must say I don't recognise the criticism levelled at the car. I am well over 6' and over 15 stones. I can easily fit comfortably in the back. Also when driving it feels powerful enough to me, certainly not like a 1.0 petrol car would. She has the Zetec trim with lots of bells and whistles. No complaints after 18 months.

For zulu, I would go for the Auris too. Reliable and if needed parts are abundant and fairly priced. For real world fuel consumption go to the relevant section of the HJ website. Best of luck with your choice.

Cheers Concrete

The Auris is the best car, but the Astra will be more of a bargain.

The Astra while it wont be as reliable as the Auris will be cheap to repair and service.

I dont like the Golf so wouldnt buy one.

Keep British (as much as possible) and go for the Astra or Auris.

Er...Vauxhalls are re-badged Opels, designed in Germany. Vauxhall and Opel are both owned by US car giant General Motors.

Toyota is a Japanese company and the Auris was designed in Japan.

All the mass-market cars made in Britain are made by foreign companies.

I know the Astras are designed in Germany and US owned but they are still manufactured in the UK in Elsmere Port by British workers using a lot of British sourced parts so they maybe foreign owned but the wages they pay out to the workers and the the money that goes to British suppliers is all good for the British economy.

The same goes for Toyota - they maybe designed elsewhere but the are manufactured here.

That is why I did say to 'keep British (as much as possible)' as I know there are not British owned mass producers now.

If all are much the same price, the Astra is by far the beat deal as it's so much newer. The 1.4T engine isn't quite as nice to drive as VW's 1.4TSI as it is has less low down torque.

If you can find one, the Astra also used the 1.4T engine in the SE and Elite specs which have 16 inch (I think, may be 17) instead of 18 inch wheels which will get tyre prices and the chance of pothole damaged wheels down.

One other option which may be worth looking at if you want the nicer to drive VW TSI engone is whether you can get a current model Seat Leon for your budget. This model was launched in late 2013 and is pretty much a Mk7 Golf for less money, and secondhand prices for the petrol hatch are quite good.

I know it's a bit "left field" but don't overlook the Citroen C4 Cactus 1.2 - a terrific triple turbo engine in a lightweight but large bodyshell - really supple suspension but it also handles well - a bit like a pumped up 205 GTi - I drove one and absolutely loved it. They are cheap to run, comfortable and practical. They are one of those rare cars that feels faster than they are so you can have fun without threatening your licence. They still cruise nicely on the motorway.

They are available for 24 hour test drives, so borrow one and do your daily commute to see how well you get on.
