Handsome station wagon of Exeo saloon, surprisingly good to drive and ride in. Looks better than saloon. Multitronic auto from 2011.

Station Wagon version of SEAT Exeo shown at Geneva Motor Show, called Exeo ST. Particularly good looking in light metallic blue/grey.

ST measures 4,670mm in length and has a seats-up load capacity of 442 litres (less than the saloon).

Like the Exeo saloon, the ST is built on a new line at Martorell, near Barcelona. It is offered in S, SE, Sport and range-topping SE Lux trim levels, with an initial choice of three engines, all Euro V-compliant, two common rail turbodiesels producing 143 PS or 170 PS, as well as a 200 PS turbocharged petrol. They all have a standard six-speed manual gearbox.

Several colour combinations can be chosen for the cockpit.  The dashboard and console come in black while the colour of the lower part, depending on the upholstery choice, is either black or beige.

The position of the infotainment and climate control buttons is ergonomically excellent while the five round ventilation nozzles have a chrome surround which makes the interior both more elegant and more distinctive.  The easy-to-read instrument dials also have a chrome surround on ‘SE’ spec’ cars and above.

The dashboard features several handy storage drawers.  In the upper middle part there is a lined drawer with a lid that dampens noise (open on the ‘S’).  There is also a bottle/cup holder that can be easily activated and is ideally placed for the driver's right hand, though, of course, drinking and driving is now deemed illegal.

The spacious glove compartment can be chosen with one of two versions, including a sophisticated cooler for drinks.  The glove compartment also contains the iPodâ or USB connections.

The central console design offers the extra comfort of a folding armrest.  There is a button panel next to the handbrake that includes the tyre pressure monitoring control, AUX-in connection and 12V power socket.  The basic gearknob comes with an imitation leather gaiter and single stitching, while in ‘SE’ and above there’s a leather gaiter and double stitching in two colours.

The Exeo ST features a spacious load area with a load capacity of 442 litres, and up to 882 litres when the rear seat backrests are folded, resulting in a completely flat area from the folded backrests to the rear hatch.  When loaded to the ceiling, the boot offers 564 litres of space with the rear seats in place, or 1,354 litres when the seat backrests are folded.

A roll-away load cover is attached to the rear of the backrests that hides contents to boost security.  Of the two versions available, one also includes a mesh curtain that separates the passenger compartment from the cargo space.  This vertical curtain protects both cargo and passengers, and can be attached behind either the front or the rear seats.

There is a mesh-covered recess on the left for small objects, and an optional elastic retainer on the right keeps objects in place. All versions are equipped with four hooks as standard to attach a mesh load cover.  Furthermore, on the ST version, a 12-volt socket can be found as standard on the right-hand side of the load bay for plugging in a cooler, for example.

The carpet lining the floor of the boot can be folded in three, leaving a broad plastic surface open for objects that could otherwise dirty the upholstery.  The plastic floor has a lid that reveals the spare tyre and tool pouch.

Customers can also optionally choose a carpet with a rubber coating on one side that covers the entire surface of the boot even when the rear seats are folded. This carpet is useful when transporting dirty or wet objects such as ski equipment or fishing or hunting gear, and is easily removed for cleaning.

Cabin options include an interior lighting package which offers lights on the front armrests, the front and rear ashtrays, footwell lighting, lights on the door handles, so-called ‘puddle’ door lights and a dome light.

Surprisingly good to drive. 2.0TDI CR 143 trickles down to quite low RPM, making it feel like a Superchipped 2.0TDI PD. Handling better than an A4 B7 S-Line with better ride as well.

The coolant system of my car is contaminated with transmission fluid - what can I do?

I own a 2012 Seat Exeo ST 2.0 TDi Auto. One morning I found a pool of transmission fluid and water on my drive. It was towed to a SEAT main dealer and they informed me that the coolant system is contaminated with transmission fluid. The two possible fixes are changing the gearbox and cooling system at a cost of £10k plus or changing the radiator, flushing out the system and topping up the gearbox at a cost of £1000. Can you advise me?
If the car engine has not been started then there's a reasonable chance that little or no coolant got into the transmission, so it's worth having the transmission fluid replaced by dialysis using a Liqui Moly ATF transfusion machine (member of The engine cooling system also needs to be flushed of transmission fluid and the radiator and heat exchanger replaced. Cross your fingers...
