Start Rescue is one of the newer breakdown cover providers in the market, operating through Call Assist Ltd and recording an impressive score of 9.18 out of 10 based on 33 respondents. Start Rescue offers five levels of cover with prices starting from £19.75 for local roadside cover, making it a popular choice for anyone looking to keep costs as low as possible. Personal cover starts at £53.12 a year.

Breakdown Cover Satisfaction Score 8.99

Auto Aid is part of a group of companies including Auto National Rescue and Euro Rescue all owned by Right Choice Insurance Brokers, but its strong showing here is based only on customers of Auto Aid. Its impressive score of 8.99 is based on 77 respondents, putting it in second place. These prices are based on covering a car rather than an individual but personal cover starts from £59.99 a year.

3. GEM Motoring Assist Gem

Placed third in our ranking table was GEM Motoring Assist, with a score of 8.86 from 90 responses. GEM policies offer personal cover so there is assistance available in any of your vehicles or if you are driving a hired or borrowed vehicle, and there are membership benefits such as discounted motor and travel insurance too.

Breakdown Cover Satisfaction Score 8.34

Britannia Rescue is part of the LV insurance group, so it is no surprise to see it ranked in the top five,  based on 118 responses. Anyone with an LV car insurance policy can add Britannia breakdown cover easily, with five levels of cover available. LV=Britannia also claims an impressive average response time of 53.45 minutes to callouts.

5. AA Logo -aa (3)

Breakdown Cover Satisfaction Score 8.55

The first of the breakdown giants, the AA finished in fifth place, scoring 8.55 out of 10, based on 643 users. Thanks to a strong reputation the AA has tradtionally been one of the most popular breakdown cover providers, but has increased its range of products to compete with newer rivals. Various types of cover are available with monthly or one-off annual payment plans. Below we show the annual cost for cover of a vehicle. Personal cover starts at £79.

6. Nationwide Download (5)

Breakdown Cover Satisfaction Score 8.54

This breakdown cover is offered by Nationwide Building Society as a part of its FlexPlus current account, so it is not available to those who are not customers. However, it received a rating of 8.54 out of 10 from 75 respondents, indicating a good level of service as well as impressive value for money. Because the breakdown cover is provided in a bundle of insurance products, the effective cost is currently £13 per month if you have a FlexPlus current account.

Breakdown Cover Satisfaction Score 8.45

Another of the big breakdown providers is RAC in seventh place, scoring 8.45 out of 10 based on 676 respondents, which puts it just fractions behind the AA. The RAC offers a choice of personal breakdown cover or vehicle breakdown cover, and builds a price depending on the options you add in - with things like battery cover, tyre replacement and key replace available. It is currently offering cover on 18 month fixed plans.

Breakdown Cover Satisfaction Score 8.44

Close behind the RAC in eighth place is Green Flag, another of the better-known breakdown cover providers, which was rated 8.44 out of 10 by 565 respondents. Green Flag offers a choice of cover policies specifically for your cars or you as an individual, with a tailored quote based on your circumstances. Unlike its main rivals, Green Flag uses a network of independent providers rather than branded vehicles and mechanics. It promises that its online prices are up to 40 per cent cheaper than if you buy over the phone.

Breakdown Cover Satisfaction Score 8.16

In ninth place is AXA, which offers breakdown cover as a part of its comprehensive car insurance policies, with four levels of cover including European coverage. As one of the newer providers its score of 8.16 was based on fewer than 20 respondents, but bodes well for anyone who currently has an insurance policy with the firm.

10. Emergency Assist 

Breakdown Cover Satisfaction Score 7.94

Rounding out the top ten is Emergency Assist with a respectable score of 7.94 out of 10 from 16 respondents. Although this is a relatively low number Emergency Assit is one of the newer breakdown providers and will likely be scored by more users in the next poll. Emergency Assist offers three different levels of cover. Personal cover is not an option.
