Car display says "Statutory Inspection Due" - what does this mean?

The display in my car tells me a statutory vehicle inspection is due. Is this applicable in the UK? What does this involve if required?
Read the service and warranty book. But the term "statutory" refers to something compulsory by Act of Parliament such as an annual MoT test. If you bought the car in another country, then it may refer to the regulations in that country, possibly based on the build date of the car rather tan when it was first registered.
