Vauxhall Astra H Estate 1.3CDTi - Diesel engine vibration (again) - Waino

Oh dear, I thought my 1.3 Astra was running so well and then the previously described engine vibration started at around 65k miles. The shaking occurs around 1800 to 2000 RPM (see http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=85208 )

A number of owners described the problem in the earlier post but no one appeared able to come up with an answer.

Has anyone managed to satisfactorily solve the problem?

Cheers Waino

A shameless bump for this post! I really would be interested to know what you chaps did next after reporting the vibration problem with the 1.3 CDTi Vauxhalls when the original thread went cold.

Did the problem right itself? Did Vauxhall come up with an answer? Did you find a local diesel specialist who solved the problem? Did you fob the car off onto someone else, or did you give up motoring in desperation and buy a bicycle instead?

Cheers Waino

I think I have the answer to the vibration problem mentioned above, and on earlier posts. Following a recent MoT test, the car struggled to start and, after initially supecting a duff replacement fuel-filter, it was discovered that an airway (to/from?) the EGR system was choked with carbon - some of which had probably become dislodged during the emissions tests, causing the poor starting issue. The airway was cleaned out and, not only was the starting problem solved, but the car ran a lot better, pulled away better - AND the vibration appears to have stopped!

Waino,

Interesting as my car suffers from this. Can you before specific as to which airway was blocked. I d like to get mine sorted as its not the easiest car to drive when in its present state!

Sorry, the technician wasn't any more specific - I did try to get a bit more detail, but the chap was up to his neck in work. I only know that it was to do with the EGR system. Apparently, it was carboned up very badly. I admitted that I tend to change up as soon as possible and that, in order to minimise fuel consumption, I tend not to thresh the engine. The advice was to 'give it a bit more stick every so often!'. I think the appropriate term is 'an Italian tune-up!'.

Without a doubt, the car runs significantly better since this operation was carried out. As it didn't seem to add anything noticeably to the service bill, I'm even tempted to get it checked out as a routine every couple of years.

Any update on this vibrating/shaking problem, i have just bought an Astra 1.3 diesel which has the exact syptoms described in this thread, I have had a garage machanic test drive the car and he came back and said there is nothing wrong with it which is annoying because I know damned well there is ! The engine just does not like 1800 revs in any gear.

"Any update on this vibrating/shaking problem"

Just dropped by and noticed that this thread is still going.......

It's some 8 months now since I reported that the vibration problem in my car has been more or less sorted (see above posts). Occasionally, there is a slight recurrence of the vibration, but this is not really a problem - I normally, say, drop a gear, give the engine more revs and go more quickly through the suspicious rev range. If pushed to quantify the efforts of the garage, I would say that they have given the car a 95% cure.

Also, I tend to rev the engine more through the gears as I am accelerating and I tend to cruise at 70 (+ a bit) rather than 'no more than 60'. I can still achieve 60mpg on a run. Additionally, when driving on motorway/dual carriageway at a lower speed and the car hits a slight incline, then the engine revs are inclined to drop rapidly into the 1800 area where the vibration may occur.

Driving back to Bury St Edmnds last night after playing at a gig near Canterbury, my mate took over the driving for the last 50 miles, and he didn't observe any sort of vibration issue. He normally drives an Octavia 1.6 diesel.

An unrelated problem that worried me greatly with the car was hellish stiffness of the gear-lever, also reported previously on this site; sometimes it took two hands to change gear!!! Web searches warned that the problem could be anything upto a totally duff gearbox. The same garage sorted the problem in an instant - all it needed was lubrication on the linkages costing peanuts to sort out while it was in for service.

If you live anywhere near central East Anglia, I'd be happy to recommend the garage - they really do seem to know what they are talking about!

Thanx waino,

My car starts first time every time so I am wondering if the EGR can be the culprit ?

Hi there, I live in east Anglia and experiencing an engine vibration stroke shake, when loading the turbo up in 3rd gear or above. I've cleaned out the very we'll clogged up egr valve and changed the duel mass fly wheel and there is no difference in doing so. I also might add that it is very low on power and sound like a miss fire is going on. My next point to check is DPF to see if bloked. If you could pass on the details of the garage that are experienced on in the know of this engine, that would be appreciated. Antony

Same goes for me as I live in east Anglia. If you could pass on details of the garage that would be great!

Sorry - it's been some time since I checked this thread and I may be too late.

A month ago, the 1.3 engine wasn't running too well - the vibration was beginning to come back, and starting was rather hesitant. Then, well into a 100 mile drive, the engine warning light came on (the orange car with a spanner across it). I googled the problem, found a reference to 'the pedal test' for finding fault codes www.all-carsonline.co.uk/forums/?showtopic=4274

Knowing absolutely nothing about it, I carried out the test (easy and free!) and the codes came up for problems with both the EGR valve and glow plugs.

On returning home, I took the car to the garage mentioned earlier (CD Friend, Eastgate St, Bury St Edmunds - near the Fox pub). They sorted it by replacing the EGR valve and all four glowplugs - total cost £363.50. I should add that a) the car is now running better than I have known in the 4 years that I have owned it and b) I have no relationship with the garage other than that of a happy customer.
