Just had my mk IV Golf in for its 3rd annual service. I was surprised that its spark plugs don't need changing for another year.
This means the car still has the plugs it left the factory with.
Does this seem right - should I change them anyway?

If it starts and drives, leave alone.

Maybe slacken and retighten every year or two to prevent seizure?

Thr reason for plug's long life is twofold 1.Unleaded fuel-so not much build-up of muck on the electrodes. 2.One or both electrodes are plated with Platinum-usually a P or PP at the end of the plug ident. number.(if they have C or CC-they're copper plated-not as long-lasting).

I change my plugs every 2 years as a general guide. When you get it done is really up to you.

As long as you haven't had any problems (misfires, oil burning, wrong fuel etc) then they should be fine. I would remove them and put copper grease on the threads though - there's been much discussion on here about siezed plugs. Do make sure you replace them with the correct ones when the time comes.
