Carburated petrol engines - Cold starting additive/petrol octane - mss1tw

Hello all,

Couple of quick questions!

- Is there a fuel additive that will help engines start in colder weather? 'Dry fuel' doesn't make much difference.

I remember reading about acetone on here a long time ago, reckon that would be any use?

- Would a lower octane rating be better in cold weather, due to the fact it will more easily ignite under compression?

Don't mention Easy Start :-P

Thanks!

Hello,

Battery in good condition ignition system and the car regulary serviced would be in my opinion your best bet in cold conditions

Acetone is used for nail varnish remover handy for paint brush cleaner.I am not sure putting it in your engine would do any good.

Octane rating I would go for the higher octane quality petrol from the established petrol stations.

Oil refiners naturally leave a higher proportion of butane (a nuisance contaminant in the refining process) in petrol in the winter to aid easier starting. Acetone may help a little but too much may damage the fuel system.

I think the advice as previously given to keep car and battery in good nick is as good as any.
