There seems to be a lot of conflicting advice about when to renew the timing belt and associated parts (water pump, tensioner etc.) My VW Golf owners handbook states:-
CHECK at 60,000 miles then every 20,000 miles. REPLACE every 80,000 miles.
There is no mention of a time period in years but, although my Golf has only done 25,500 miles, my local main dealer has sent me a letter saying it should be replaced NOW because it's 4 years old!
What would be the best advice to follow, mileage only or mlieage AND years?
