Peugeot 306 - Disconnecting airbag - northy44

I just had the pleasure of taking out dashboard to change heater matrix. On putting everything back together and reconnecting airbag the warning light started flashing (after replacing the warning bulb which had been taken out) I've read on many forums that it's the seat belt connections under the seat. Is it ok to just disconnect the airbag connector at the steering column until I have time to sort this out - I assume it just means no airbag - it won't go off on it's own, and does the flashing light just the system won't work not that it's in danger of going off. I'd appreciate any advice.
