I have a rumbling sound coming from front end, imitates sound like loose exaust or engine sump cover but isnt I have checked! on accelerating only, but disapears if hand brake is pulled up, like something is resonating. the car was booked into a dealer to service and cure the noise they charged me £ 337 and did not cure it, told me to live with it for a while but refused to refund my money

There have been reports of just this noise on www.frenchcarforum.co.uk The cause seems to be the fitting and adjustment of the handbrake cables.
The problem is that you don't know how much of the bill was for the service and how much for for attempting to cure the noise.

This may be be the intermediate bearing on the offside drive shaft, these can get quite loud at low speed and fade out above 30ish, definately more noticeable on acceleration. Not an urgent repair as these will rumble on for many miles.
A good indy will diagnose for sure.

An independant (non-official) repair garage. Most makes have them. They are usually owned/run by mechanics who have left the dealer network and gone "independant".
I live in a relatively quiet area of south Gloucestershire and there are 3 specialist Citroen indies within 15 miles of me so they arn't a rare breed.
I still recommend that you have a look in the frenchcarforum I suggested above. They have a large number of Xantia specialists on it who have probably forrgotten more about Xantias than most dealers ever knew. Xantias being repaired/serviced at a Citroen dealer must be few and far between now and I bet that most of their workshop staff have little experience of them.

Biggles, what's the correct year of manufacture of your car? I did email you and ask, but you didn't get back to me.

I wonder if this is in fact an HDi 110? These are known to have an issue whereby the front brakes rumble at <1500 rpm - worsened by fitting after market pads that are a bit loose. IIRC there is a kit availble from Citroen which is like an enhanced anti rattle spring that will stop it. It's quite dear though - I'm just living with the noise!

PS the part number for the kit is 4449.71 - and apparently costs somewhere near £50....

Don't forget that the handbrake on these cars works on the front discs, does dabbing the footbrake have the same silencing effect as "notching on" the h/b?

Could it be a dragging pad (had this on mine but early enough in its life to be sorted under warrantee.
