Car Evolution - why no "Mark" models anymore - BobbyG

When Ford had their Cortinas, Escorts etc the new model became the next "Mark".
IIRC The Cortina, for example, went up to Mark V and I can visualise each of them based on that.

However nowadays Audis, BMW, Mercs etc etc all have strange code numbers with each revised model. Why do they not all just go down the "Mark" route?

I think that its still done, although its not official, eg the Mk7 Golf, Mk3 mondeo although there is the Astra G, Astra F
