Has the light got some kind of symbol on it?

Conventionally this symbol means that the handbrake is not fully released - though it may not be applied enough to affect driving. Could make discs or drums a bit hot though; so check that if the brake is fully off there is no fault in the actuating switch.
Haven't seen it flash though.

And as PeterD mentions, it is generally also a low brake fluid warning light.
dimdip, the symbol is an exclamation mark surrounded by two brackets ie, (!) - as mentioned by the OP of this thread.

Ah apologies.
Front pad wear sensors could be another possibility then, if so fitted.

Yes but that goes off after a couple on minutes where as the fluid level dos not. Check the fluid level and report back. Regards Peter
