1995 1.6 Dip beam not working. - bsm
220 Coupe. Dip beam is not working. Car has 60/55W H4 and 55W H1 bulbs fitted ie 2 main beams. Fuses and bulbs tested OK. Side lights and main beam working OK ( both main beams work in each headlight ). Continuity between dip beam bulb and fuses 10 & 11 (dip beam left & right ) is OK. Battery voltage measured when dip beam switch is on, between blue wire at switch and earth. No voltage measured at fuses 10 & 11 with switch on. Are there any relays for dip beam or is it controlled by Multi-function unit?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,
The most likely cause is the dip switch stalk. A very common failure on Rovers. I know as It's happened to me. Change the slak and it should cure the problem.

Hope this helps

Check the pink Lucas dim-dip relay hidden on the R/H door pillar. They melt.

Thanks for the info guys.

I saw the pink relay you mentioned Screwloose when doing auto-electric gymnastics in the drivers footwell, I'll check it out when Son his brings car home. ( What should I expect from the dim dip function, as dip beam always seems to have been full power ).
Robin the switch seems to be OK as I can see the voltage appear / disappear when switch is operated ( testing between blue cable near switch connector and earth ). Wiring info from Haynes manual.

Thanks again.

Dim-dip was a canny idea fitted from the early '80s. It meant that the car couldn't be driven on sidelights as, with the ignition on, the dipped headlights came on dimly with the sidelights.

On some cars it was a tack-on system that can simply be unplugged if it fails - on these, the dip circuit passes through the relay and relay failure takes the whole circuit out.

Pop the top off the relay and observe the plastic around the contacts; if it's melted, you may be able to trim the excess away to get it working temporarily.

As Rover parts are now scarce and LSUK have gone bust; you can get a 13DA relay from a Land-Rover source as that exact one was also used on 300TDi Discoverys.

Screwloose,
Sorted. I got a relay from the breakers fitted it, normal service is resumed. The coil of the faulty relay was open cct.
Thanks again for your advice, very much appreciated.
