Hi,

I'm about to look at a couple of 05 Diesel Xsara Picassos which are both listed at £5k in 2 local dealers. I have cash and no part exchange so it'd be a straightforward deal.

Ideally I'd want to pay no more than £4.5k for either of them. Is this realistic or too high/low? I'm not really sure at which price I should be starting my negotiations!

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers

How close are they to being out of their 3 year warranty and to their first MOTs?

you probably need to give miles/spec for an answer.

Ok, they are both on 05 plates so I'm guessing they're outside of 3 year warranty. Specs are:

2.0 HDI Desire 2, 28800 miles

and

1.6 HDi Exclusive, 39000 miles

Thanks :)

Better to know than to guess - the balance of a maker's warranty is worth having and if it is out warranty it is a bargaining point for you.

Ok, for the purpose of this let's say they are outside of the 3 year warranty.

If it's on a '05 plate, no guessing is necessary, it is out of warranty.

Hi Chris, looking on Autotrader would say the 2 you are looking at are a bit overpriced (sorry).

Have seen similar starting from £4000, but the majority of similar ones seem to be going for 4.

Admittedly there do seem to be pricing variations depending on what part of the country you are in, so the £4-500 pounds over the top probably isn't excessive.

Personally I think I would start at 3,500- maybe less, and aim for 4000 to 4250. Dont forget the tips from Dom Littlewoods programs to say your price then keep shtum whilst they think! If you are really going for the hard bargain I would take someone who is car savvy with you. Did this on the last car I bought from a dealer, was offered 2,500 trade in for mine against a 9500 car- after 2 hours negotiation cost to change was £5000. Every time went in the dealership for servicing the salesman came over and chatted, so obviously was a deal he enjoyed too. Don't forget the longer you are in there, the keener they are to make a deal, as don't want to waste their time, especially in this climate.

As an aside, have you thought about using an auction buyer such as Joe Dowd? Between myself and friends have bought many many cars through him, all perfect and were much much cheaper than dealer forecourts.

Sorry for double post, but forgot to add that actually had a Xsara Picasso myself, sourced through Joe. Was a fantastic family car, very comfortable and very spacious.

Which spec is the 1.6- is it the 110, or 90? I had the 2.0 HDi 90, wasn't by any means slow, but having driven a Ford C-Max with the 1.6 TDCi would say it was the better engine.

Am not sure which output the C-Max had as was a holiday hire car, was base spec model so assumed it was the 90, but was very nippy and felt more like a 110 to me.

I did make contact with Joe a few months ago but didn't quite have the funds in place at the time but I may revisit that avenue now that I know of someone that has bought a Picasso via him.

Thanks for the guidance re: the prices and I'll see how it goes. I think the 1.6hdi is the 110 version but I'm not 100% sure. I'm also looking at going to an auction asap just to get a feel for the prices and what they're going for. Maybe the Joe route is the way to go.

Cheers
Chris

If you wanted to try a little cheek, you could offer three grand. If they scoff, just say you will come back in a few months when prices have collapsed further and offer even less.

It's dog eat dog out there.

my brother has just got a 2.0 hdi C5 estate. vtr model with 25k on the clock.
dealer wanted 6k for it on a 06 plate. it had been sat thre for about 3 months.
the dealer said he would not go below 5.5k. after a lot of haggleing he got it for 4.5k.

it seems cash is king as they have wages to pay and any money is better than none.
be really firm and be prepared to walk away.

Many thanks to all that replied. It was all very useful and I'm definitely going to do my best to get one for no more than 4k :)

Good luck, and let us know how you get on. My own personal recomendation would still be to go through Joe. Regardless of the cost savings, he does have an uncanny knack for sorting the wheat from the chaff.

If it's any reassurance to you so far have bought a Mondeo, Xsara Picasso, Xsara and my wifes Escort through him. The only fault of any of those cars so far has been the fan on my Xsara was blowing full blast over the summer. Found out later that was caused after my daughter managed to push the front passenger air vents in- when I fixed it I accidentally disconnected the vent from the feeder tube. Reconnected it, solved the problem.

A close friend of mine has had 12 or 13 cars through Joe, and, as with my experience all have been as described and no problems with them.

As for the car, from my experience would recommend test driving both engines. From own experience think the 1.6 is superior to the HDI 90. Unfortunately the 2.0 HDI 110 wasnt available in the Picasso- have got it in the Xsara and the extra 20bhp (and intercooler) make a big difference.

Whilst the market is certainly soft I'm not sure prices are collapsing quite as fast as some seem to think. The big collapse was between May and August and since then prices are falling month on month (they always do) but not by huge amounts for good sensible cars.

I was at an auction yesterday and there was strong bidding on many cars with most making close to "book" and selling. Even some of the larger stuff, older luxo-barges etc. seems to have got so cheap people are seeing value in them and buying again which is actually pushing up prices slightly. There is also very stong demand in the sub-£4k sector for just about everything with prices increasing if anything (basically the price range where people do not need finance).

Any car you buy now will almost certainly be 15% cheaper in February but that would apply in any year.

The cars which will probably drop are those which are currently worth about £15k which in many cases will be worth £10k in March.

Here's an update as requested:

On the 1.6HDI exclusive they wouldn't even entertain the idea of dropping the price and the salesman said "it'd be gone within a week at that price" as we walked out the door.

Similar thing with the 2.0HDI. At first he said that the car would come with value protection insurance and some upholstery protection scheme, both of which we said we weren't interested in. They've had this car a while so I said £4200. The guy went off to his manager and came back saying that without the 2 aforementioned schemes they couldn't do anything. He didn't even come back with a counter price to attempt to negotiate. So, once again, we walked.

So, all in all, not a very productive effort. Neither would budge from the asking price and never really attempted to. Oh well, back to square one!

I'm on the other side, I've got an '05 1.6 Hdi Exclusive that I really want to P/X and I'll be lucky to get 3K. IT has got 100K on the clock mind.
