My Zafira suffers from a nasty wiper clunking noise that happens when the wipers change direction, any advice?

Change the blades. I bought a pair of 'own brand' ones from a well known high street chain; they clunked loudly enough to be a real distraction. I took them back, they agreed there was a fault and I paid the £4 difference to replace them with Bosch blades which are completely silent and well worth the difference.

Probably the multiple ball joints in the wiper linkage are worn &/or need some more grease to take up the slack.
