Sorry the title should read K&N filters.

An interesting test - the results don't surprise me at all.

How anyone can be in the business of testing filters and be unable to spell "coarse" as applied to dirt just amazes me. It would never have passed my final approval as head of a testing laboratory.

It's a pity that no European filters were tested - a Mann & Hummel unit would have made an interesting comparison with the Delco filter whose initial pressure drop was rather high. A high humidity (tropics) test should always be carried out on paper elements to check for integrity as some units collapse completely when wet and near their maximum dirt holding capacity. This will cause major turbocharger compressor damage unless a metal screeen is fitted to the clean side of the filter. The presence or otherwise of this screen was not noted in the test - filters vary and it can be very important in some applications.

The air filter is usually visible, easily accessible for ill-informed tinkering and can cause inlet roar when badly designed. This is presumably liked by the users of aftermarket devices and gives an impression of more power to those unable to give the matter proper thought.

They were American.....

those unable to give the matter proper thought.

The perfect description of a K&N buyer.

I've saved that link to my Favourites file - it'll get used on all those "Why has my MAF clogged up" questions....

Yup stopped using them a while ago, after reading a report by a US race engine builder who found he was doing more frequent tear downs (rebuilds) with K & N than with conventional filters. Less of an issue on the 944 because it's the airbox that's restrictive not the filter panel.

I seem to remember a test in maxpower ( I was young!!) when they tested aftermarket filters on a nova (of course!) and the best power increase was to drill some more holes into the original filter housing.
