Bemused. Two bolts hold the starter motor onto the engine; one visible, the other completely hidden. Anybody know what the trick is? Haynes says to loosen the bracket that the motor is attached to, but it looks rather like an engine mounting bracket.

I can't visualize the layout on that one; but it's not uncommon for VAG starters to hold on the engine mounts - Golfs are similar.
To release the weight on bracket; support the engine from underneath with a trolley-jack or similar.
