Ignition lock Lubrication advice please - mark830_1
My trusty old 1994 Vitara's ignition lock is becoming unreliable. It is prone to jamming in the off position, have used wd40 which has helped. Is there a specialist oil for locks available out there,

Thanks as always

When the solvent evaporates then WD40 goes sticky. Not the stuff for locks. Use silicone spray.

I've mentioned this before, but I'll give it another mention:-

once you've loosened the lock up with wd-40, then take note of Cyd's suggestion in the following thread:-

:edit: Sorry, misread your post and thought you were referring to the door locks. Still, hopefully the info in the above link will be of use to you.

I've sparingly used this stuff for years in locks. www.amazon.com/Tri-Flow-Teflon-Lube-Drip/dp/B000C1...I

This is a Amazon.com link but more thorough Googling will get you a UK supplier. See users comments at bottom of Amazon link which is just what I've found with the product.

Discovery II has a similar problem. The natural key entry angle into the barrel from the customers perspective does not line up with the axis of the barrel. The key cuts into the mazak housing on the edges of the key entry and the bits of metal get into the mechanism and jam it up. No choice but to replace the assembly. Interestingly Rover 800s use the same ignition lock but do not suffer this problem to anything like the same extent.

Your car may not suffer this exact problem but may suffer other wear in the mechanism. Apply any lubricant very sparingly as ignition locks are not open at the back like door locks.

My advice would be to replace the lock before it becomes an emergency job. Think about the inconvenience and cost of not being able to get to work one morning 'cos your ignition is jammed up - would you lose a days money? Or what if it happened a long way from home?

If you go to your local dealer he should be able to get a lock to the same key code. This will take several days - so another reason for doing it now rather than when it jams.

Local locksmiths (still plenty around) will sell you a tiny container of graphite based lubricant - its the best thing for lubricating a lock.
