switch connected to lock mechinism or mercury switch inside panel ?

just looked and yes a reed switch in the tailgate i would have said too,not dismantling to check for you though,obviously check the bulb first

Mercury switches haven't been used for years-modern equivalent uses a ball-bearing.

Thank you to Bell Boy for the reply and for taking the trouble to check. I can take it then, that there is a tilt switch inside the tailgate. How do I get to it please?

open tailgate
remove tin cover
undo the loom clip on the far left connecter (to the left of the windscreen wiper)
remove the rod from the key lock
undo the two bolts holding tailgate catch
slide the tailgate catch to the left
pull it out (careful everything is razor bladeish)
the switch is on the catch (no reed switch)
reversal as they say
its a pretty good connector to be honest cant see why it should fail

So this is not a tilt switch but a switch operated by the boot latch. Can I take it that the wiring and the switch unit are on the tailgate side rather than the body side of the latch mechanism?
