Cougar V6 - cambelt change interval ? - Blue {P}
Hi all, I'm looking ahead slightly to our long and depressing UK winter and planning on getting a Cougar V6 to potter around in from October to March, the plan being to take the MG off the road and garage it in the dry.

I've tried doing a forum search but couldn't find the answer, can anybody confirm what the interval is on the earlier Cougar V6 2,544 CC for the cam belt, also, is it the usual story of getting the tensioners and water pump done whilst it's in there?

Oh, and does the engine suffer from the plastic impeller blade water pump problem that afflicted the smaller Mondeo V6? I know most of those owners have replaced to a metal water pump now.

Any help appreciated!

I seem to recall this engine being maintenance free for 100,000 miles", excluding oil changes.

Cougar a very underrated car. Nice chassis and good to drive. That V6 makes a gorgeous noise as well.

Woo hoo!!! That's what I wanted to hear! :-)

In that case, if they're free of big work for 100,000 miles, does anybody know what work I would need to budget for at 100,000 miles?

Guys, I've had a change of plan and am now buying a 2000 W Mondeo V6, can you just confirm and clarify for me that the V6 engine in the Mondeo is also chain driven? The one that I'm looking at is on 67,000 miles and I'm not keen on the price if I need to do any major work!

Cheers

Actually I think I've found the answer in FAQs but if someone can double double confirm it I'd be less nervous about buying :-)

Can't you just open the bonnet and look Blue? It is immediately obvious what drives the camshaft or shafts.

Would do, but the car's in Coventry!

Thanks everyone, that looks distinctly like a chain in that diagram.

With 67,000 on the clock I think she should have a fair few miles left in her yet then :-)

All depends on oil/filter changes with a timing chain. When in your ownership, drop the oil yourself between services and the engine will go on forever. At least another 100k if it's been looked after so far.
