Hardly. Look at how old the A series engine is.
Hmm, I guess I'm one of the few of my generation who didn't ever own a Mini; to this day every car or van I've owned has had a tin sump.
I'll try to console my neighbour by mentioning that if he had a steel sump it might have rusted eventually : )

The only A-series cars I can think of without a steel sump are the front wheel drive variety (mini, maxi, austin 1100 etc.) and that was the gearbox casing, not really a sump per se.

The Maxi had an E series engine (I think) and there were only two to choose from - 1500 and 1750cc.

Yes, it was a gearbox casing, but the gearbox and engine shared the same oil. To change the oil you have to use the same principle as any other car - that is to remove the sump bolt.

a steel sump should not be welded in situ, i have done it once, never again, nearly blew my head off, and yes, the oil was drained.

You forgot to fill the engine with CO2, Halon or weld-shielding gas first. What can't burn, can't blow.
An airline blowing through the drainhole prevents a stoichiometric mixture forming inside too.

Alloy sumps are far from new. I had a 1947 Triumph Roadster with an alloy sump - a very elaborate finned affair, wider than its attachment footprint, which made getting the bolts in a pain. They were notorious for developing fatigue fractures around the drain plug, requiring expensive welding.
The engine had been used before the war on the Standard 14, and also on the SS Jaguar 1.5.
I've never had any problems with Volvo sumps rusting - they make them of proper steel, not old baked bean cans.

My 1934 Armstrong Siddeley had an alloy sump.

My 1929 Velocette has got an alloy engine casting that incorporates the crankcase and (2-stroke) oil sump. But now we're just getting a bit silly!
PSA use alloy sumps on XUD and HDi engines with A/C because the lugs for the A/C compressor are cast into the sump.
