Speed-camera location rules relaxed - Roger Jones
Heard on the news that the Beloved Government is relaxing the rules for positioning speed cameras, so that it will no longer be a requirement that the site has been the scene of accidents over a long period of time. Big Brother gets even bigger. I am truly fed up with this suffocating regulatory culture devised by bus- and bike-riding academics and bureaucrats in central London.

Our local Camera Partnership was on the news this morning. It gets almost 10 requests a week from people wanting speed cameras erecting with offers to pay/sponsor them. This relaxation of the rules will no doubt be greeted with great joy by them.

But accidents will increase at sites where they stick cameras with no previous history due to regression to the mean. Then the awkward questions will start - why did 3 people get squashed there when you had a camera but none did when you didn't? Also councils are going to have to pay for them out of their road safety budget so expect fixed camera numbers to drop and more enforcement with the dodgyscope will appear. Also the requirements for visibility haven't been dropped so cameras must be visible from the required distance. After 10 years of cameras road deaths just haven't fallen so hopefully they will actually get back to proper driver education. The onus has also been placed on councils to hunt down the uninsured and unlicenced drivers who are 10x more likely to cause an accident. Getting the scumbags off the road would be the best idea but as there is little room in prison enforcing driving bans is going to be rather tricky. Even with 100,000 cars crushed a year the probability is that you'll drive around for 20 years before being stopped and having the car crushed. There will be the lucky few that will be stopped more and those that will never be pulled.

It's not london bureaucrats. It's the EU. They want cameras, ISA, road pricing and all the other rubbish. Our pathetic govt just bend over and take it.
