Hi there,
my elderly 1989 celica (2.0 16v) has started making a nasty noise- it sounds like somone hammering metal in time with the revs. it is worst on startup or harsh acceleration. it hasn't ran hot- all the fluid levels appear to be ok- oil presure (by the guage) is normal-
any ideas?
recently had a new head gasket and radiator if this matters
could it be tappets/rockers?

Before the radiator and head gasket were replaced, did it overheat? Was the oil contaminated at this time by coolant? It sounds like one or more big end bearings to me, especially as it's more noticeable on acceleration. Is the oil pressure gauge a realistic indicator? Some manufacturers (including Jaguar) have sometimes wired the gauge to a pressure switch, so it only really gives a go/nogo indication. Was the oil and filter changed at the time of the head gasket / radiator work?
