Crash notification device, EU enforced? - local yokel
Through work I've become aware that the EU and Ertice (www.ertico.com) are pushing for crash notification monitoring devices in every new vehicle by 2009.

Who will be receiving the info and what will they do with it?

Whatever they say, it's all a cover for being able to charge for road use, and issue automatic speed penalty fines.

No - these things only activate when you crash (or the device thinks you've crashed). It's not a real time system so you don't need to worry about big brother.

Info will probably be routed to the emergency services in the same way that information from aircraft ELT's (Emergency Locator Transmitter) is done at present.

However, there have been a number of false alarms with ELT's and if these things are activated by an accelerometer, the number of false alarms could be a problem.

Given the amount of speed humps and other traffic calming measures, vehicles have to endure, the threshold parameters will have to be set quite high.

You'd just link it to the airbags, wouldn't you?

No, that would be too simple, these are EU bureaucrats.
