Golf - sunroof/climate control - colinh
The Golf (mk V) manual states "the Climatronic system should only be switched off in exceptional circumstances, e.g., if there is a fault in the system".

Any ideas why there is this warning - if the sunroof is open it seems pointless to have the system working, albeit in economy mode?

I suspect the logic is as follows:
aircon refridgerent gas contains lubricant, lubricant is needed to keep seals in good condition, seals are lubricated by the circulating gas, therefore you should not leave the aircon switched off for any length of time.
I've read on this and other sites that VW use an 'intelligent' compressor (hopefully one of the more knowledgeable contributors can elaborate further), that minimises the power needed to turn the compressor when there is little need for the airon cooling, hence it is best to leave permanantly on...

A sunroof AND airconditioning always seems weird to me.
Give me aircon every time. Sunroofs are hateful creaky things that reduce head room. IMHO.
