A PEDESTRIAN was ordered yesterday to pay £184,728 in damages to a motorcyclist who knocked her down on a Shetland road.

Now if everyone was made responsible for their actions....

Not that I object to the approach, but where was the money to come from ?

And if she did have insurance (perhaps household) allowing this amount to be paid, would they have been as enthusiastic/diligent in pursuing her if she did not.

Taken from the article...

Margaret Halcrow, 60, who has insurance to cover the award, was held by a judge to have caused the accident by stepping in front of Amy Ratter's motorcycle.

It's only taken 7 years to get the award ...

A few years ago I was riding through London. Pedestrian (on mobile) trotted out from between parked cars and ended up draped over the front of my bike, breaking the screen in the process.

I kept upright, the ped disengaged himself from the bike, muttered some kind of an apology and legged it, still on the phone.

Not a happy bunny and left with the bill for a new screen.....

When I used to drive ambulance in Florida, we responded to a pedestrian that got hit by a car while running across the road. He was nowhere near a pedestrian crossing and was deemed to be at fault. I remember getting an escort from a State Trooper to the hospital who waited until we unloaded the patient before pressing a traffic violation ticket into the man's hand.

It seemed harsh at the time, but it was deserved and hopefully he will think twice about running in front of cars again.

IIRC In Japan you could get arrested for a similar offence.

I remember being told off by a policeman over there for doing something similar when I was around 13. As expats, we were advised to carry our passports with us at all times just in case. It could have saved a trip to the station.

There are a lot of places, outside the metropolis, without pedestrian crossings. Locally I have a mile walk to cross the road at the local belisha beacon, but to get to the pedestrian crossing I have to cross a road. In America they don't expect people to walk, and now they can't, but in the UK it's still possible, and even necessary.

Yes. And that's why kids get taught the green cross code at school. By all means cross a road, but it's up to you to make sure you're not going to get mown down in the process. By all means own a power-saw, but don't chop your own arm off with it. Simple common sense.

[Copy of post from a while ago.]

I am reminded of being rear-ended when I had to do an emergency stop to avoid hitting a pedestrian in Camden, who ran -- ran, not walked -- onto a zebra crossing without looking either way. Mr Van Man who shunted me said "That was a bit sudden, mate". I said "What did you expect me to do -- run over him?" Pedestrian disappeared, oblivious. Not the only instance of reckless pedestrian behaviour, of course, but, as we know all too well, motorists are [almost] always to blame.

They'll be putting a speed camera up next. It will add to the accident statistics
