What is daN.m ????? - dmj 71
Hi.

Can anyone tell me what daN.m means on tightening torques?

Just replaced the rear hub and bearing on a scenic 1997 with abs and looked on my renault cd for the retightening torque on the hub nut. It is listing it in daN.m at 25 !. If this was standard Nm then surely it would be tighter than 25Nm?

Any help is always appreciated.

Thanks again
David.

daN.m is a Deca Newton Meter.

I think it is going to be just 25Nm then - as 1 daNm is 1e1 which is 1!

Correct me if I'm wrong! Its the weekend....

deca is one of the multipliers that wind me up.

It saves one digit, generally a zero.

It replaces the saved digit with two letters.

Some abbreviation!

I agree. In electronics, where the range of component values is very large, only multipliers in the range of thousands are used,
so we have
Pico 10 to the -12
Nano 10 to the -9
Micro 10 to the -6
Milli 10 to the -3
Kilo 10 to the 3
Mega 10 to the 6
Giga 10 to the 9
Tera 10 to the 12

This covers almost every possibility, and values are always between 1 and 999. Why they need oddballs like deca and hecto, I'm not sure.

I don't think it's intended to be. I think it's more of a significant figures thing. i.e.

250 Nm - tighten to 250 Nm

25 daNm - tighten to between 245 Nm and 254 Nm.
