A6 Multifunctional Switch - nightmare! - Nsar
My Avant Auto 1995 won't kick up and when I select drive the whole car moves with the force. The indy transmission specialist it's with has traced the problem to the multi-functional switch sitting just under the gearshift, but having got it out and tested it, this apparently works OK but the probelm remains
Their computer says that's the problem, but as it functions it must be something related and they are now scratching their heads.
This all started when I called the RAC out having flooded the engine in Mid-Dec and it's been on&off trailers being pushed from from garage to garage since.
Can anyone suggest where the problem may lie and whether cranking the engine at the time of trying to fix the flooding could be related to this problem?

I don't fully understand the first line of your post, however:

The 'multifunction switch' tells to the transmission control ECU which gear has been selected. It uses this information (together with other info such as engine rpm, road speed, throttle position, temperature etc.) to energise the correct shift solenoid on the transmission valve body.

An obvious place to start is to probe each solenoid (or wires thereto) and check that the correct ones are energised.
The problem could lie in the switch, its wiring or the connector from the switch the the ECU. Check out the switch signals actually at the ECU connector, rather than on the switch itself.

Aprilia,
Thanks for your reply - sorry my powers of communication are dim today. I can select drive/reverse etc but when it engages there is an audible dull clunk and through the shift it really feels as if it's been an awful effort for the box to get there, to the point you can feel it engaging through your backside. When driving the car simply stays in first gear the revs just kep getting higher.
It's with a transmission specialist at present but he's at the edge of his knowledge, plus he's just gone in to hospital for a pacemaker op and I don't want to send it to a main dealer as the thing is only worth about £4k. The guy that has got it is being very decent ie although he's put quite a few hours into it, because he hasn't fixed it he hasn't charged me.
What I need is Audi auto electrics wizard in striking distance of Manchester with access to the workshop manuals.

Are you saying the RAC towed it a lot?
It may be worth checking to see if they should have taken precautions such as overfilling with fluid, not exceeding a certain distance or speed, or not towing at all....maybe if they didn't do these, they caused mechanical damage?

ST - I have approached them and they require a report from a reputable garage which links the actions they may have taken when trying to fix the car/transport it with the failure of the switch/whatever is actually causing the problem. As it stands, because I can't say for sure what the precise problem is that is on hold. The problem is that three garages have now looked at this and it has been transported between all three, sometimes on a loader, sometimes towed.
Could you exapand on your comment about over-filling, I don't understand.

You need an appropriately experienced transmission specilist, not necessarily an audi specialist.

Auto-tranmission specialists are a failry close-knit bunch. I would give Alan Bilby at Newood Transmissions a call (he used to run FATE - may still do in fact, or he may have retired now!) - he may well know someone in your part of the world who deals with Audi 'boxes.
Newood Transmissions are in Southend on Sea (Essex) and will be on the web and in the 'phone book.

Many thanks, you're a gent (I assume!)

Correction to my post above! I got mixed up between Southend-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea (I'm getting old). Alan Bilby is in Clacton (Auto Techs). Tel. 01255 429790

Sorry for the error.

Did you ever get your transmission problems fixed? The reason I ask is because I'm having the same problem with my 99 A6 Avant. At times (and that's another problem - it's intermittent) it won't shift up out of first. Need to stop & put the car in reverse and then forward again. The AUDI mechanic says it's the multifunctional switch, but is not 100% confident that replacing it will fix the problem. It's currently being worked on in the AUDI shop. Reading your experience doesn't make me confident that replacing this switch will fix the problem.

I would say the Audi shop has a slim chance on fixing it.

These are the ZF 5HP19 tranny - used by VW/Audi and on quite a few BMW's (in RWD configuration).

I would check/clean the MF switch and the connectors. Also the connector to the transmission ECM. From the sound of it, it **could** be the MF switch though. These transmissions are very complex and they suffer from quite a collection of 'stock faults' including failure of the one-way roller clutch on the input. You really need to take it to a transmission 'shop for some proper specialist investigation.
