Vibrating steering wheel - treblecel
Vauxhall nova 1.2 merit (J plate) has developed an intermittent vibration through the steering wheel. It can happen at cruising speed or during acceleration, then disappears again.
Anyone know the possible cause of this?
Thanx in advance

Silly question, but have you had the wheels balanced lately?
Vibrating steering wheel - treblecel
Probably not!
Its not actually my car, but I drove it last night for a friend and the aforementioned vibration occurred.
So is that likely to be the cause, and is it simple to get fixed?

So is that likely to be the cause,

Not necessarily, there are other causes as well. [1] But if they haven't been balanced for a while, or your friend hits loads of kerbs or potholes then it's the easiest place to start. As for is it simple to fix - find the address of your nearest tyre centre and take the car there and ask the men in overalls to balance the wheels for you.

[1] Other causes:-
1. Bent driveshaft.
2. Worn steering components.
3. Worn suspension components.
4. Mishaped tyre.
5. Buckled wheel.
6. Distorted brake discs.

If (as you say) the effect comes and goes, there may be two sources of imbalance going in and out of phase. As DD says, start with the wheels - though unbalanced wheels are usually only obvious at 40 mph+.
