Vinyl Wrapping - Dingle232

A mate of mine is buying a new car but they don't do it in the colour he wants so have offered him the opportunity to vinyl wrap the car ) it's a BMW, work to be done via the dealer).

Are there any downsides to this? Does the original paintwork retain its integrity and are there any issues with the vinyl 'coming off'?

I know absolutely nothing about it though a Google search reveals it's quite common.

Any views/experience? Thank you.

When I've seen videos of it being applied, they use a craft knife to get a good fit. I assume the blade must break the paint at the cut.

I've no idea of the long term effects that may have.
