Following Ford's decision to stop making cars in Australia from 2016, GM have announced that they too are ceasing manufacturing in Australia from 2017 - leaving only Toyota building cars in Australia.

This comes on top of GM's recent announcement to pull Chevrolet out of Europe.

In 2012, GM was pushed down to 4th place in the world ranking for car production (ie excluding trucks and buses) - overtaken by Hyundai/Kia who are behind VAG and Toyota.

Nearly everything Holden sells now is made outside Australia, except the Commodore derived cars. Will GM still make large RWD cars outside Australia and import them? or will the Australians just get Korean GM products in future?

Whilst this news is bad news for the Australian workers, from a purely selfish point of view, I hope Vauxhall can continue to import a small number of large RWD cars (where ever they are made) and maybe even at better prices as the main issue with Australia now is the value of their currency

The only RWD cars that GM makes with RHD are Holdens - the big Chevrolets can't be built with RHD although future generations could.

Regardless of the brand badging, this will affect GM in Australia as LHD cars aren't permitted and sales of LHD big Chevrolets in the UK will remain in very low numbers.

Ford had already announced they were ending manufacturing in Australia, now it looks like Toyota is following suit - leaving no-one making cars at all in Australia.
