Which is the best wheel option for a Land Rover Evoque Si4?

I have ordered a Land Rover Evoque Si4 auto 4WD. This normally comes on 20-inch wheels, but there is a 19-inch wheel option. I argue that smaller wheels with larger tyres will give a softer ride and be less likely to scuff the rims against the curb, but my friend says the 20-inch wheels will give better handling and make no difference to the ride. We both also have SLK 350s, his on low profiles, mine not. His ride is much harder, but he says it will make no difference with the Evoque. Can you please advise (before we come to blows) as I need to confirm with the garage.

If you want to treat this Evoque as a sports car, using its Ford Ecoboost engine to the max, then there's no reason not to go for 20-inch wheels apart from the fact you will suffer terrible ride quality, the rims will be vulnerable to pothole damage and the expensive tyres will frequently get damaged requiring costly replacement. If you ever intend taking it off road then the only wheel and tyre option is 18-inch rims with 235/60 R18 Pirelli Scorpion ATR tyres.
