Should my new oil be dark?

When oil is supposed to be changed at a routine service on a diesel car, what colour should it be on checking the dipstick, bearing in mind it is supposed to be new oil?

Even fresh oil picks up a lot of carbon from inside the engine and becomes blackened quickly.
