Honda Civic - Suitable replacement for Nissan Qashqai?

I'd like to replace my Nissan Qashqai 2.0dCi with a Honda Civic 1.8. The diesel Civics are not an option due to unavailability of low sulphur diesel. I regularly drive about 1000km to and from the nearest city, therefore fuel economy is key. I need to be able to overtake double trailer trucks as quickly as possible, therefore the power delivery is key.

I'm concerned the 1.8 might be unsuitable for this.

Road test and video of the latest Civic 1.8i here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/honda/honda-civic-.../

I found it very good, and 48mpg was 3mpg better than the old model.

This was a manual, of course. Don't expect the same of an auto.
