BMW X3 - Manual or Automatic?

We are thinking of buying a new BMW X3. What's your recommendation on the transmission to go for, manual or automatic? Most 4x4s seem to have automatic transmissions, why is this the case? After years of driving manuals and like the 'involved' driving experience, but this is our first 4x4 purchase.

I think in this case the 8 speed auto. It's been around for 18 months now with no problems reported, it makes the engine slightly more efficient with slightly lower CO2, but more importantly it will make the car much easier to sell in years to come.
