Buying an economical car

I currently drive a Y reg Seat Arosa - bought at a year old ,which has proved reliable and economical for my 1,000 miles per month commuting mainly by motorway. I would like to replace it with a similarly reliable car. I am not attracted to any particular make or model and am not sure whether to keep with a diesel model or move to petrol in these days of increased fuel costs. All I want is a comfortable car that is nippy and economical, ideally with low or no annual road tax payable.

Look at the car's direct successor, the SEAT Mii, or a VW Up!, or a Skoda Citigo. They start at £7,630, but to get one completely free of annual tax you have to pay at least £8,890. www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/seat/mii-2011/ That said, the Citroen C1, Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo are all now under 100g/km so are all free of tax.
