Diagnosing poor fuel consumption

I am experiencing very low fuel returns on my 2006 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi Ghia of around 28 miles per gallon.

The large rubber hose that connects to rear of engine was replaced due to a 1 inch split in it but the car still guzzles fuel and in addition the temperature gauge takes forever to rise above the 60 degree minimum level and even on a long run it doesnt get anywhere near 1/2 way.

For example, I left the car idling outside this morning for over 20 minutes whilst clearing snow off it etc and temp gauge didnt even register at end of this time yet hot air came out of the heater vents when I turned the blower motor on.

I am wondering if its the heater sender unit that is faulty and causing car to overfuel as a result?

Well we are not sure if the temp problem and the fuel consumption are related. As for the temp gauge go to www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=59922, where you will see feedback ref gauges.

As for the fuel consumption,
1. Check for fuel leaks
2. Check for air filter/intake restriction
3. Engine oil level ( to low)
4. Would then suggest a diagnostic check
5. If nothing shows up then check FRP ( fuel rail pressure ) sensor
6. Fuel pressure regulator control solenoid
